a habitat in which we can survive

astronomers have found a planet they say
that rains liquid iron,
maybe these are the earths of days past
we were forced to abandon;
and this planet we have now is our last chance
to save humanity—
you’d think we’d learn from our past mistakes,
but for some there is no learning
only ignorance;
and demands and greed—
why do we value money more than our own lives?
i want to live,
and for this universe to thrive;
for the birds to sing and honey bees to pollinate
a place where we can all survive;
let us learn a lesson from earth’s pasts and never
destroy another planet—
we need a habitat
in which we can survive.
