Train Ride in Italy

She just wept

Surrounded by strangers

And with a tear stained face

She boarded the train

But one person

Could not ignore

That her heart was on the floor

Once she saw that sorrow

This stranger had on her face

It was mesmerizing

Like a warm embrace

Through the crowd of emptiness

Permission to cry

As the stranger watched

Wondering why

Broken heart?

Life bearing down?

Put to the test and feeling she’d drown?

Her tears were the words

No need to speak

They locked eyes

The stranger nodded, and although weak

She returned the gesture

To say that she knew

A whisper of a smile

Left the train, pain subdued

And the kind stranger

Tipped back her head

Closed her eyes

Feeling the train roar back ahead

Knowing the ruins of life can be cruel

A tear fell for the woman that wept
