Would you rather suffer or purge your life of what no longer serves you? Boom. Mic drop. Can you imagine what it would be like to remove or eradicate anything that does not make you feel good and feed your soul? This sounds like an obvious statement but do our actions reflect this, usually not.
There are many moments in our life in which we decide to stay and subject ourselves to an environment that drains us of energy. Why? There is always a great excuse why. Consider if you’ve said or thought the following:
- I am so lost in what to do with my life.
- I have to have this job or else I’m a failure.
- It used to be so good. If I wait, he/she will treat me like they used to when we first started dating.
- I know they’re addicted but we’ve been friends since I was little. I have to be there for him/her.
- I’m not going to work out because I’m tired.
Purge has such a negative connotation. For me, I think of the line, “binge and purge,” but purging is something that can be healthy and life transformative. Imagine removing toxic or poisonous substances from your life; it would be like breathing in smoke then finally experiencing fresh air. Like I said, transformative. We suffer because we choose to. Yes, it is your choice to allow these people into your life, it is your choice to stay in that job or unhealthy relationship, it is your choice to not deal with your emotions. So where can we start?
Step 1: Get clear with where you are suffering
- Where do you experience anxiety?
- Where do you find yourself not able to explain your feelings but clearly unhappy?
- Who do you not want to see yet go and see?
- What gives you the most anxiety and why?
- Why do you avoid a certain activity or person?
Step 2: GET RID OF IT!
Easier said than done but do you really need to keep talking to your ex? If it’s a one-sided relationship. MOVE ON! Do you have to go see that family member that belittles you every time you are in the same room? No, take a rain check. Do you have to have an Instagram where you compare and body shame yourself daily? No.
The ball is in your court for your life and you get this amazing opportunity to take a different path for where you want to go. There is a saying along the lines of: no matter how far you’ve gone down the wrong road you can always turn around. I don’t mean avoid anything uncomfortable. Going to the gym and working out is uncomfortable, you might be sore, but guess what: it’s temporary! What I’m referring to is if you dread going to work because it’s a negative environment or seeing that specific person – DON’T! There is no obligation, there is no requirement, there is no one saying you are a bad person for respecting your personal boundaries. If you don’t respect yourself, no one else will. So it’s your choice: suffer or purge.
