She Won’t

I wish I could say it hurts a little less

Each time I find the truth

But instead, I lose another piece

Of who I was before I met you

I’m sitting here on empty

Shaking off these fumes

Trying to separate all the lies, big and little

From what’s true

Someday I’ll be myself again

And for myself, I’ll be enough

I’ll stop trying to be what it is you need

When what you need can’t be done

Someday I’ll learn to trust again

Years or decades down the line

I have faith someday, I’ll be okay

That in the end, I will be fine

I was whole before you met me,

I have somewhere I can go

I will survive what you have done to me,

but trust me when I say

She won’t.

Often in between us, our bed is rarely just us two

She fills both our minds endlessly

Though in different ways, I’m sure

You see her beauty, her laugh, her charm

She is the best thing in your world

I see her perfect stunning smile

And imagine the pain she’ll endure

Someday I’ll be myself again

And for myself, I’ll be enough

I’ll stop trying to be what it is you need

When what you need can’t be done

Someday I’ll learn to trust again

Years or decades down the line

I have faith someday, I’ll be okay

That in the end, I will be fine

I was whole before you met me,

I have somewhere I can go

I will survive what you have done to me,

but trust me when I say

She won’t.

Those big brown eyes and lashes

That bat at you from bed

When she’s had a bad dream and needs her daddy

To scratch her little head

Full of hope and promise,

She believes the world is good

Those eyes will lose their sparkle

When she learns what men will do

Someday I’ll be myself again

And for myself, I’ll be enough

I’ll stop trying to be what it is you need

When what you need can’t be done

I was whole before you met me,

I have somewhere I can go

I will survive what you have done to me,

but trust me when I say

She won’t.

Full of hope and promise,

She believes the world is good.

She will never view this world the same

When she learns what men will do.

Her eyes will never be the same,

When she sees what her hero can do.
