Rest, Sweet Girl

“Sweet girl” she whispered, through the silence

Of that dark night, that soft solitude

The universe told me though my own ears:

“Sweet girl, you can never be fully grown

In a life of constant evolution.

Embrace that child in you

Let me hold and rock her to sleep

And know that all the while

You are also the Goddess that reigns

Over the world you build and walk in.

You are both my child, my little love

Growing, learning to run, singing.

And the queen I myself send out

The queen that conquers.

Know that no matter

How this cruel world may

Break and batter your kind heart

And make you feel otherwise with their actions,

You are loved. Completely.

And here in the arms of my silent night

You are always welcome to come and rest.

In the days of your life

You are the fierce warrior who’s brow must

Be stiff. But here, in your aloneness

You are welcome to let go into the night

And I will recruit all the stars

To catch you while you fall.”

I'm a writer, award-winning blogger, essayist, and speaker. My work has been featured online and in print internationally including Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, The Seattle Times, The Huffington Post, two books, and my own various sites and projects. At age 17, I fought stage 4B Lymphoma cancer, the experience of which continues to shape both the way I live and the way I write. My work is part personal story, part skepticism, always respectful of the grit it takes to be an authentic human being, woman, and creative. I've also worked as a fashion journalist, won 2012 Fashion Blog of the Year Award in Seattle, spent a few years as a fashion PR gal, and served a year in Americorp.
