Note To Self

It is a good thing you are doing

And brave

Because it is hard to willingly

Walk into darkness

Without flashlights

Or glow bracelets

Or light up shoes

And still

Choose to seek the stars

To offer mercy as easily as taking someone’s plate

And washing it clean

And letting it get dirty all over again.

It is a good thing you are doing

And kind

To invite every pair

Of eyes into the celebration

To make roses

Out of wallflowers

To draw people onto this dance floor

And draw them into

Deeper freedom

Even if it means

Uprooting them a little.

It is a good thing you are doing

And important

To suffer long and still

Be kind

To be happy to love

Even when not loved in return

To come alive with the spring

To forgive the fading winter

It is a good thing you are doing

And meaningful

And you must believe that it matters.
