Grandma’s Hands

Grandma’s hands.

Grandma’s hands taught me how to read.

Those same hands also taught me how to eat.

Grandma’s hands taught me how to walk.

Grandma’s hands also taught me how to stand tall.

Grandma’s hands held mine while we crossed the white lines.

Grandma’s hands were always ready to pick me up and tell me “everything’s gonna be fine.”

Those same hands also taught me how to cook.

Grandma’s hands took me to church.

Grandma’s hands taught me how to say my first real words.

Grandma, you did the damn thing.

Raising me, bathing me, taking care of us three.

I hope you live long enough to help with my little me.

Grandma’s hands are going to teach me forever more.

Grandma’s hands even taught me how to do my own chores.

Grandma, use those hands to give yourself a pat on the back.

Mama, cut yourself some slack.

Grandma’s hands have always been filled with so much love.

Grandma, use those same hands and come give me a hug.

Grandma’s hands.. you see everything I said above?

Grandma, thank you for not playing when it came to us.

I am a 22 year old college graduate. Poetry helps me put my feelings and thoughts into words, when I cannot seem to verbally express them. I love the arts, I believe it was my first love. I hope to reach others out there who feel the same way I do most times.
