Grade Buds: A Collection Of Poems

BLOOM

We cannot wait to be flowers.

We are all so excited to blossom,

To bloom into the best,

most radiant versions of ourselves.

As seeds we imagine what it will be like

to finally break through the top layer of soil

and find the light for the first time.

But what we must remember

Is that before we can rise from our roots

Those roots must first be

Planted, pruned

And immersed

in the depths of the dirt.

SUNFLOWER

When I compared myself

To the peonies, the poppies, and the tulips,

I gave up all hope of ever being beautiful.

I was not pink. I was not pretty.

I prayed that someone would come along

And tell me

Their favorite color was yellow,

And that they always liked things

That reminded them

Of the sun.

ALL

The human heart is not complicated,

but rather tragically simple.

All it wants is to be loved

for the wandering mess that it is,

and to be loved wildly in return.

That really is all.

PRESSURE

These things you carry now,

They are hard and heavy things.

But they are turning you into a jewel

more precious than gold.

THE GUTS TO GROW

“Oh, you will grow here,” they warned.

They, being the weeds.

“You will be thrown to the ground.

Buried alive.

Soaked to the bone.

Poked.

Prodded.

Some of you may even be picked

before your time.

And that is okay.

Hell, that is part of the rush.

Keep fighting.

You have to want it bad enough.

You have to need to see the light

and you have to believe that light

needs to see you, too.

Stick with us, kid.

It won’t be easy,

but you will surely grow.”

SEASONS & SYMPHONIES

Of course you will go through seasons, child.

Don’t the trees drop their dead leaves every winter?

And don’t the lilac bushes blossom again every spring?

You’ll do the same – and you need to.

Each season has its rhyme and its reason.

Trust that your song, too,

is becoming a symphony.

TIME AND PLACE

Everything in life

Unfolds at its own pace.

You may water a plant endlessly,

But fruit is only borne at the right time and place.

THE LAW OF REAPING AND SOWING

When I learned that my mind was a garden,

I began to plant only the things

I most wanted to grow.

THE INGREDIENTS OF GRACE

“You’re beautiful,”

said the Earth.

“I believe in you,”

sang the seeds.

And with a warm hug from the sunshine

and a gentle push from the rain,

the tree grew gracefully

and without end.

It works the same for people, too.

LOVELY AS SO

It is a lovely thing to be a seedling,

Young, tender, and full of hope.

It is lovely, still, to develop roots,

And for those roots to continually grow.

How lovely it is when spring arrives

And tiny buds begin to show.

Every stage, a newfound grace,

Exactly as it is, and lovely as so.

UNSEEN SPLENDOR

Have you ever stopped

To think about how many flowers

Will never be seen?

Not by one single soul.

No one will ever admire their beauty.

No one will ever smile

At the smell of their scent.

And yet they bloom.

In an unseen splendor,

They bloom.
