Girl to Woman

I caught wind of a request
To never have it up
My hair
My hand
My chin or my self esteem.

My mind did not rest
Because I obliged
Every smirk
Every word
So much worse than sticks and stones

I couldn’t help but be done
A clipped bird so tethered
Not seen
Nor heard
Yearning to just go

And so I did spread my wings
Kept on the bone
So wide
With pride
It was happiness while alone

I once thought that impossible
But have I never been so sure
Stupendous
Contentious
You reap what you sow.
