As good people, we can find ourselves in a position where we are consistently doing things for others and forgetting about ourselves. Taking care of ourselves sometimes becomes a low priority. But we can’t pour from an empty cup, as they say, so we need to think about the ways in which we can keep ourselves healthy, cared for, and do things for us without needing to consider other people. It isn’t selfish to take care of ourselves, as long as we aren’t negatively impacting anybody else.
But it’s all about getting the balance right. This is especially true for parents but works in the same way for everyone, including those of us who take care of poorly relatives. Here are a few suggestions on how and why doing something good just for you is important.
Learn a New Skill
It might sound as though learning a new skill or activity could be more to add on to your plate. However, the dedicated time you take to learn this new skill is dedicated time to bettering yourself overall. This is a very valuable and important use of time. If there is something that you have always wanted to try, or there is a skill that you used to have that you would like to brush up on again, then there is no reason why you can’t sign yourself up and get on with things.
Sometimes we make it bigger in our heads than it actually is, so it can be hard to take the first step, but if there is something you want to do, and you need to take time to do it, then you should consider taking the plunge.
Learn An Instrument
Many people find that learning a new instrument or refreshing their knowledge of a musical instrument, can create more time for themselves, because of the commitment that this takes is time you cannot rearrange, especially if you take classes, or are receiving tutoring. You will also find that the more you learn about a new subject the more there is to learn, which opens up a whole new world of learning opportunities.
If for instance learning how to play the guitar is something that you want to do then you will be surprised to learn of the different types of playing, such as ‘slide guitar’, often used in the blues style of music this is a technique that uses a tube or bottleneck to hold down on the strings and create a completely different sound many musicians love learning how to play slide guitar as it creates a new sound to work with. So before long, you’ll be going from not knowing a thing to a tuning and open tuning your instruments, all of this is time well spent and adds to your time spent doing good things for yourself.
Join A Fitness Class
Many people join a fitness class with the sole aim of losing weight or becoming fit. But there are also people who join fitness classes Because they want to better themselves and improve their mental health as well. Been able to spend a few hours a week fully engaging in an activity that not only gives you time to yourself, social interaction, and potentially a new skill to learn, but it also produces endorphins which can help your overall mental well-being as well. There is a whole range of options, and many new technological advances have come about in recent years, which means you are able to track your progress, and sometimes compete against others at the same time.
Adding a competitive edge to any physical activity that you do can improve the enjoyment greatly. With the achievement that you feel about any activity whether it’s a physical fitness class or otherwise, you will feel a huge amount of fulfilment and self-confidence too
Create something
You don’t have to be a professional artist to create something for yourself. You can follow a class whether in person or online, take up an upcycling project, or just pick up a pencil and a pad and see what you come up with. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, but spending time creating something special just for yourself or your home, can be a wonderful gift to you from you. We aren’t all the creative types, however, most of us feel a sense of relaxation when it comes to painting or drawing.
There are even adult colouring books now that we can use to help with our mindfulness and creativity time. So don’t be afraid to paint that wall in your house the colour you’ve always wanted to, or sketch that scene and put it in a frame for your wall. Whatever you do remember that it is purely for yourself and that you can enjoy it without pressure.
