“The creative adult is the child who survived.”
I couldn’t tell you who originally said that, but I’ve seen that quote several times, and it rings true every time. I don’t think anyone “chooses” to be a creative. I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out: I don’t doubt that some set out to become a painter, a musician or a writer—but how many of us actually chose what comes along with these professions?
It’s like being dared to do the unimaginable—to break down the box where people have placed you and put everything you have into your art. It’s gutsy. It involves sleepless nights and actually becoming the proverbial “starving artist.” It requires a certain amount of courage that having a traditional 9-5 protects you from. It’s an unshakeable belief in yourself that what you’re doing will eventually sustain you. Most of all, it’s doing what makes you happy.
True, there will be times you’ll doubt yourself—times you’ll want to give up. And you’ll come close to doing just that. But there will be other times when a piece of music, a poem or a painting will speak to you in a way that lets you know you’re on the right path, and it will all be worth it. Those are the moments you’ll chase—the ones that deliver an unspeakable high and make the struggles in between worth every second.
Being a creative isn’t a fad or a trend. It takes a special kind of person to give life to the art inside of them. Ask yourself, are you letting yours breathe or are you letting it suffocate?
