Again and Again

I build fires

just long enough                                                                                                                                                                  to choke on the smoke                                                                                                                                                 and blind my eyes

I smother the flames

every time

with my own breath                                                                                                                                                             the desire to give heat away

I carry the ashes                                                                                                                                                        in my rain jacket pocket                                                                                                                                       like loose change

I’m sure I’ll let go of someday
