An anxious wait, a heart beating fast;
Half-forgotten memories come all at once.
Thoughts gallop past – confused and dark,
Faced with the reality that is painfully stark.
The path ahead looms lonely and bleak
Trodden by a vagrant’s bare feet.
The scraps of unspoken words will remain
Forever lodged in her feverish brain.
Unplayed sonatas from the times long gone
Reach from the shadows across the path;
They’ll vanish at the raw, frost-bitten dawn
Leaving a flimsy trail in the aftermath.
Time freezes; it hangs in icy clumps
As if waiting for a miracle that will never come.
A door left ajar quickly shuts
And her heart starts beating like a drum.
The solitary figure suddenly stops
At the crossroads between reason and a mind forever lost.
Her hands falter and then slowly drop
As the scorching tears turn to frost.
