I don’t expect you to understand
The words I have never said.
They got lost among the strands
Of the ragged covers on the bed.
In dreams induced by feverish angst
I spoke the truth just once.
The rest were lies mostly advanced
To calm my racing pulse.
Dripping with regret, soaked in pity
I could not move a limb.
Pale, fatigued, no longer pretty,
Undecided: to drown or to swim?
I don’t expect you to remember
The promises I have never made
I played a game and I lost forever
Everything that I put at stake
