An Artistic Response To A Loss

Domestic violence is a cowardly act, yet strong enough to slowly weaken the confidence of another’s abilities and self-worth. This unwarranted need for power and control typically takes place behind closed doors. Even though the victim’s loved ones suspect or know of the physical and mental abuse, it’s frustrating to battle against the years of manipulation and brainwashing by the perpetrators.

After many years it’s still difficult, but the loss of my only sister and sibling in a domestic violence incident pushes me forward to help people see the value they have to offer. My sister never realized that she was a beautiful, wonderful person. I am very grateful that just months before the incident we had a chance to talk about how much I admired her. After some time passed, I stepped back to ask how could I contribute to help women, be confident and powerful, compassionate and gracious, as well as respectful and respected in their own journey. It sounds cliché, but everyone is unique and truly has something to contribute and successes to achieve.

There are many components required to build confidence, but if we can take one step each day then imagine where we will be after just one year. Nothing builds confidence like taking a leap of faith and jumping into a situation and finding out you are stronger than you realize.

One aspect to battle all the negative feedback in attempts to control women, is the need for constant positive motivation and encouragement. We need to build our self-esteem and confidence. We give so much to others, but we must emphasize our own self-development. As an artist, I developed a “Sister” series – a tribute to my sister, Laura, and all the other victims who face domestic violence on a regular basis. These independent and spirited portraits are individual ladies with distinctive names and motivational messages about being strong and inspirational.

Some examples of “Sister” photos and corresponding motivational quotes:

Coquette – “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.”
