The Intuition of an Aesthetic

A seaside view, bright open spaces, tall ceilings with beams, a dark navy velvet couch, offset with the intricate patterns of a soft rug. Harry Styles and Tom Petty records play softly in the background. The smell of amber and orange flutter through the room. There’s a chilled vodka martini with three large olives on top of the white marble countertops. A breeze passes through the room and I put on my favorite blue sweater with jeans that give the perfect shape to my petite frame. My desk faces the view, there are sailboats in the distance and my creativity is unbridled.

I have just described my perfect aesthetic.

But what constitutes an aesthetic? How do we find one?

Sometimes when I’m perusing through inspiration, I pause and quietly question whether I know what I like. Everything starts to blur and “aesthetics” start to feel the same. Do we all like the same structures, patterns, and themes?

An aesthetic forms in the quiet moments between our minds’ rambling thoughts. It’s the second before we recognize our ego and mind at play; it’s our intuition. It’s the feeling of shopping with your mom and pulling out a sweater and her saying “That’s so you.” before you even have the chance to realize it yourself. It’s the small gravitational pulls to an object you have no reason to be attached to. It’s the moment when someone says, “It reminded me of you.” It’s the small pieces of our minds that manifest into tangible objects that represent our energy, our feelings, and our aura. Anesthetic is the result of your intuition’s guidance. It’s the manifested version of your vibration.

Your style isn’t basic, your aesthetic isn’t overdone, and you don’t have to prove anything to anyone. You can decorate your life with the simplest or the most intricate details. One is not better than the other, and everyone’s aesthetic is entirely different because the energy behind it is individualized.

Unsure of where to start? Pick out one item that makes you happy. It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to be practical. It can be a pair of leather pants that you may never wear. Maybe it’s a campy movie from the ’70s. It could be a candle that reminds you of your favorite place. Anything that makes you feel like home.

So the next time you’re in a slump, unsure of the decisions you make that represent the physical part of your life, take a step back. The answers you’re looking for are the ones in the quiet moments before you start searching.
