Cerulean

Growing up, I thought the crayon color “cerulean”
was pronounced “chlorine,”
because pool water seemed the same
brightened blue to me. The way the water
slapped and the waves bounced before
swim practice always soothed me,

even before I knew I was anxious—
that my creepy-crawly panic
had a paper label, too.
