Check Engine Light

Mental Health is the new wave now, and I am so happy it’s trending. I want it to be everlasting though. Trending stays and then goes away. We need it to stick.

I made a post on my Instagram story asking: Is your body’s check engine light on? The responses I received were yes. I replied with what are you doing to fix it.

As a vehicle with a check engine light flashing, the same can happen with the human body. The body is described often as the temple. You have to upkeep the temple. When your car engine’s light is on, you take it to the dealership or local mechanic to see what the diagnosis will conclude.

I learned this in yoga. I was practicing at the Home Depot Backyard at the Atlanta Mercedes Benz Stadium with Jaimee Ratliff. She is amazing – FYI. I have realized that it is important to pay attention to your body. What is it that you need more of? If so, make that happen. Or less of? If so, cut that out.

I am a HUGE “Grey’s Anatomy” enthusiast. If you are not familiar, it is a medical drama series. There are many episodes and they are in their 16 season! It surrounds surgeons and their lives. In every episode, there is a diagnostic phase, which is my favorite part. I apply things that they do to myself. First: always figure out what is wrong. Your mind is the engine. Get oil changes regularly or the engine will lock.

What needs to be tended to? What emotions are you running from? You could be carrying tension in your neck from stress or your abdomen from improper digestion. Do you need more sleep? You could be restless because something is troubling you or exciting you, causing your sleeping pattern to be disturbed.

Do you need to open your heart more? You can be closed off to people or opportunities from past experiences or because of self-work that you have not completed. Do you need to pay attention to your breathing or energy level? Concentrating on your breathing can help in so many ways: being happier, heart healthy, as well as tuning in to what is going on in your body.

You have to take care of you to be a good person, friend, family member, coworker/employee, boss, or productive citizen. Make sure to check the engine light, fix the problem after the diagnosis and keep at it.

I am currently putting my energy into myself while studying for the bar exam, and completing my first book. My favorite thing to write about is current events, my life or what is going on around me. Writing affects my mental health greatly as it is the best outlet! Writing puts me in a good zen-like mood. Harness empowers me as a woman because it is a no judgement, free flowing publishing platform just for women. It's a home, in a sense that you can feel comfortable as well as go to Instagram and find inspirational and self-care tips.
