Phantoms

I remembered you today.

You were probably a boy;

They tend to cause me pain.

But you —

With a beautifully fabricated face —

You are a pain I can endure.

My eyes well with dried tears of the past.

Your smile is the glimmering stars.

The tinkling of bells would be your laugh.

I’m drowning,

In the thunderous waves of phantom cries.

A name I never knew on the tip of my tongue.

A feeling I’ve yet to experience trapped in my chest.

Would you give me the life preserver?

Even when I couldn’t do that for you?
