IMMI – GRATE – ED

you took me to this new world
nothing felt like okay

I lived in silence, surrounded by sounds
I could not make them hear my voice

I was quiet for so long
searching in confused eyes
my hands did the speaking
but their language never was never enough

teetering on two worlds
struggling with my words

I woke each day,
frustration swimming in my eyes

I wanted to know the safety of home again
I wanted it to all be okay again

the warmth of my home chased me in my dreams
the icy cold of reality followed me awake

then the snow melted
my voice grew louder
it grew clearer

I spoke and they heard me
I looked and they saw me

for a moment
it felt okay.

I am me. My history began in the depths of rural India, but my present is in the height of metropolitan Canada. I am a dichotomy of many things, but one thing is for sure: I am not one thing, and there is no restriction to who I am and who I am becoming. My name is NKS, Navjit Kaur Sidhu. I am proud of my citizenship as a Canadian female of colour, and I am also proud of my birth as a poor female child in India. These two worlds have shaped me, and I try to share my experiences with you here, in hopes my words can resonate with you.
